French SVHC Restriction Proposal For Resorcinol Not Supported By ECHA MSC

18 June 2020
ECHA announces that the Member State Committee did not unanimously agree to identify resorcinol as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) at its June 10th meeting. Resorcinol (EC 203-585-2; CAS 108-46-3) is used to manufacture rubber compounds, resins, coatings and cosmetics.

Even though most of the Committee Members acknowledged there is scientific evidence that resorcinol is indeed endocrine-disruptive and is known as a thyroid-active substance, a few members did not consider resorcinol as a substance which gives rise to an equivalent level of concern to CMR, PBT or vPvB chemicals. This absence of consensus around resorcinol will only delay the final decision, which will be handed over to the European Commission’ REACH Committee.

Still, the committee agreed to identify other substances as SVHCs, which will lead to an update of the Candidate List later in June.
